Ecological Restoration

Restoring land, water and animals for future well-being of human and
non-human communities, including protection of identified 'world heritage'
rainforests and waterways and endangered species habitats.

  • Identify traditional beliefs and practices for restoration of the environment, peaceful cohabitation with Nature, and protection of natural resources. Countless meetings held with elders, opinion leaders, women, youth, ex-combatants and local government officials.

  • Identify, elaborate traditional understanding of how a healthy environment prevents conflict and fosters peace. More than 30 meetings, consultations, and workshops held. Ongoing.

  • Work with local and international environmental organizations to identify endangered areas in need of restoration and/or protection. Three preliminary meetings held. Ongoing.

  • Coordinate environmental restoration w/ Liberia's new, unprecedented national forestry protection laws.

  • Explore ways for ex-combatant youth to do the work of restoration and guardianship. At least six meetings held. Ongoing.

  • Work with local and international environmental organizations and government agencies to research, plan, create, maintain nature preserves. Preliminary, informal consultations held with local govt. officials. Key focus for 2007.

  • Explore cross-border coordination of preserves with neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone. Ongoing discussions with team members based in Guinea.

  • Identify other community projects for community gardens, recycling, solar power, etc. Preliminary contact made with international NGO's able to advise and assist. Ongoing discussions with local govt. officials and team members. Planning underway for the eg guest house in Voinjama to serve as a pilot project for solar power.
